The upside — everything is within walking distance and you never have to plan an evening. The downside — noise, crowds and higher prices than the neighbouring areas. A bike here is not for getting around Patong but for escaping it: 15 minutes and you are on quiet [Kamala](/en/kamala/) or [Surin](/en/surin/). The Patong–Kamala road goes over a hill — beautiful, but beginners should take it carefully, especially in the rain. For Patong, we confirm the bike and handover details before delivery to your hotel, villa or reception — see the [area page](/en/patong/). ## Bang Tao — if you want to breathe Our second base and, honestly, our favourite area to live in: 6 kilometres of beach with room for everyone, the [Laguna](/en/laguna/) resort complex, villas, the Boat Avenue restaurants and zero nightlife noise. People come here with families and for months at a time. The roads are flat and calm — the best place on the island to sit on a scooter for the first time. Nearby are [Surin](/en/surin/) and Layan, and to the north the wilder [Nai Thon](/en/nai-thon/), [Nai Yang](/en/nai-yang/) and [Mai Khao](/en/mai-khao/). Next door is [Karon](/en/karon/) with its long beach, and the famous southern viewpoints are a short ride away. The minus — Kata is almost the whole island away from the airport, so transfers take longer.
