## The calendar: when and how it rains

| Months | Weather | What it means for riding |
| --- | --- | --- |
| November — March | dry high season | perfect conditions; bikes run out — book ahead |
| April — May | hot, first thunderstorms | comfortable riding, showers rare and short |
| June — August | low season, showers every other day | 1–2 hours of rain, usually after lunch; mornings mostly dry |
| September — October | peak of the rains | showers heavier and more frequent; plan rides for the morning |

**The main thing about Phuket rain:** a downpour almost never lasts all day. The routine is simple — see the wall of rain coming, pull in at a cafe, order a coffee, and half an hour later ride on along a drying road.

## How to ride in the rain: 6 wet-road rules

1. **Cut your speed by 20–30%.** Braking distances grow noticeably on wet tarmac, and the tourists on rental bikes around you are an unpredictability factor.
2. **Brake early and gently, with both brakes.** Grabbing the front brake on a wet road is the classic way to go down.
3. **Steer around road markings and metal manhole covers.** In the rain, white paint and metal are as slippery as ice. Same goes for tiled ramps down to the beaches.
4. **Stay out of deep puddles.** You cannot see potholes under water, and after a downpour the roadside can carry a real stream.
5. **Keep your distance from cars and pickups.** Spray off their wheels kills visibility.
6. **Heavy downpour — wait it out.** 20–40 minutes under an awning is cheaper than any accident. On hill sections (like the Patong–Kamala road) this rule counts double.

## What to wear and what to bring

- **Rain poncho** — under the seat of every one of our bikes, free. Put it on before the shower, not in the middle of it.
- **Helmet with a visor** — keeps the drops off your face at speed; both helmets are included.
- **Phone in the holder** — the holder is included too; in the rain it is better to stop and check the route in advance.
- **Shoes with a closed heel** — wet flip-flops slide off the footboards.

## Which bike is best for the rainy season

The bigger the wheels and the more stable the bike, the calmer the wet road feels:

### The rainy season on a scooter — the rules and the numbers

What changes in low season and what to ride:

- In the rainy season it rains 1–2 hours a day, usually after lunch
- Mornings in the rainy season are mostly dry
- Cut your speed by 20–30 %
- The first 10 minutes of a downpour are the most slippery — do not ride
- Wait out a downpour under an awning for 20–40 minutes
- Roads dry out in about half an hour after the rain

## The rain poncho is already under the seat
