Phuket Viewpoints by Scooter: A One-Day Route — 2026
Phuket's five best viewpoints — Big Buddha, Karon Viewpoint, Windmill Viewpoint, Promthep Cape and Khao Rang — fit into a single scooter day: entry is free everywhere, and so is parking. The southern loop from Kata is about 60 km and takes 6–8 hours with lunch; from Bang Tao the loop grows to roughly 90 km. An APARTEL scooter starts at 250 ฿ per day, though for serpentine roads two-up we recommend a PCX 160 at 400 ฿ or an XMAX with ABS from 650 ฿. Finish the day at Promthep Cape by 5:30 pm — sunset lands around 6:30 pm, and it is the best place on the island to watch it. Below: every stop, the timing, and honest warnings about the roads.
Which viewpoints are worth the ride?
| Viewpoint | What you see | Road | When to go |
|---|---|---|---|
| Big Buddha (Nakkerd Hill) | 360° island view, 45 m statue | serpentine climb, ⭐⭐⭐ | morning, before heat and tour buses |
| Karon Viewpoint | the "three beaches": Kata Noi, Kata, Karon | coastal serpentine, ⭐⭐⭐ | midday light on the bays |
| Windmill Viewpoint | Nai Harn and Koh Man island | same road, 5 min from Karon VP | on the way south |
| Promthep Cape | the southernmost point, open horizon | normal road, ⭐⭐ | by 5:30 pm, for sunset |
| Khao Rang (Phuket Town) | the town and the east coast | short climb, ⭐⭐ | a separate day with Old Town |
The route hour by hour: the southern loop
- 10:00 — Big Buddha. Serpentine climb from Chalong; it is cooler and quieter up top in the morning. An hour for the platform and photos.
- 12:00 — lunch in Rawai. Seafood market and waterfront cafes, 300–500 ฿ for lunch.
- 14:00 — Karon Viewpoint and Windmill. Two stops on one road, 5 minutes apart — three bays first, then Nai Harn.
- 16:00 — Nai Harn beach. A swim before sunset; parking by the lake is free.
- 17:30 — Promthep Cape. Claim your spot early: parking fills up half an hour before sunset. Sunset around 6:30 pm.
Day budget for two: about 100 ฿ of petrol for the whole loop, lunch 300–500 ฿ per person, viewpoint entry — 0 ฿.
Which scooter for the serpentines?
Every viewpoint sits on a hill — climbs and blind corners included. An experienced solo rider can do it on a Fino at 250 ฿, but two-up on a climb it runs out of breath. The working minimum for a couple is a PCX 160 or NMAX at 400 ฿. The most confident option is an ADV 160 at 500 ฿ or an XMAX from 650 ฿: ABS on the descents and traction control on painted markings give a safety margin that serpentines gladly use up.
Staying on the west coast? There is a closer spot
From Bang Tao, Kamala or Patong you do not have to head south straight away: the Kalim viewpoint on the serpentine between Kamala and Patong opens up the entire Patong bay and takes 15 minutes en route. The full one-day west coast route is in the Phuket in one day guide.
Rules and safety
Helmets — always, both of you. Category A licence with an International Driving Permit — there are checkpoints on the hills near Chalong and Karon; the fines are broken down in the licence and fines guide. In rainy season wait out a downpour under a roof for 20–30 minutes — showers are short, and wet descents are the one place you do not want to save time.
