Patong is the tightest-packed part of the island. Hotels, bars and shops stand on top of each other, Bangla Road sits in the middle of it, and Beach Road runs the length of the sand. It is loud, it is convenient, and nearly everything is within a few blocks. What it does not have is space. Anything on four wheels spends half the evening looking for somewhere to be left.
Beach Road runs one way along the sea, and Rat-U-Thit behind it takes most of the through traffic, so a wrong turn costs you a long loop back. Through the evening the whole grid slows to a crawl. The other reason for a bike is parking: car spaces barely exist in Patong, while some motorbike bays are marked along Beach Road and near managed venues, but availability and permission vary by place. Ride at the pace of the traffic and keep your helmet on: at this density the risk comes from other people's mirrors rather than speed.

Patong is the densest area of Phuket: a single lane of Beach Road along the shore, one-way Rat-U-Thit and Thawewong, and from 17:00 to 21:00 all of it sits in traffic. Taxis and Grab add an evening surcharge and still take you the long way round via Nanai Road. A scooter can be convenient for short Patong trips, but traffic, crossings, weather and route conditions change; for a short central trip, walking may be simpler.
The second reason is the terrain around. The best beaches next to Patong (Freedom, Paradise, Tri Trang) and the viewpoints towards Karon are steep winding roads.
