Patong is the tightest-packed part of the island. Hotels, bars and shops stand on top of each other, Bangla Road sits in the middle of it, and Beach Road runs the length of the sand. It is loud, it is convenient, and nearly everything is within a few blocks. What it does not have is space. Anything on four wheels spends half the evening looking for somewhere to be left.
Beach Road runs one way along the sea, and Rat-U-Thit behind it takes most of the through traffic, so a wrong turn costs you a long loop back. Through the evening the whole grid slows to a crawl. The other reason for a bike is parking: car spaces barely exist in Patong, while motorbike bays are marked along Beach Road, at Jungceylon and on almost every soi. Patong is the densest area of Phuket: a single lane of Beach Road along the shore, one-way Rat-U-Thit and Thawewong — and from 17:00 to 21:00 all of it sits in traffic. Taxis and Grab add an evening surcharge and still take you the long way round via Nanai Road. On a scooter you cross the whole of Patong end to end in 10 minutes at any time of day.
The second reason is parking. There is almost nowhere to leave a car in Patong, while bikes get marked zones along Beach Road, at Jungceylon and on every soi. Riding to the beach, Bangla or breakfast — you park 20 metres from the entrance.
