Surin is the expensive, quiet stretch of the west coast. A couple of beach clubs sit right on the water; the villas sit back from it, up the slopes and behind gates, with greenery in between. There is no centre as such and no row of shops to wander along. People choose Surin for the calm, then find the calm comes with distance built into every part of the day. It is a district people take for a season, not for a long weekend.
Everything you need in Surin is close by, and none of it is walkable. The beach is a ride. The shops are a ride. The main road carries fast traffic with little shoulder, and villa driveways meet it on a slope, so pulling out takes a moment's patience. Once you are doing that four or five times a day, the bike stops being a holiday extra and becomes how the household runs.

The tall seat gives you a view over the traffic and clears the humps at the villa gates, the brakes stay predictable on a wet main road, and there is room for the shopping instead of holding it on your knees. Surin is Phuket’s “millionaires’ mile”: villas and designer condos in the greenery, a beach without a single sun lounger (it kept its natural status after the renovation) and a crowd that came to live, not to party. Cherng Talay is the large village behind Surin and Bang Tao where half the north-west’s long-stayers settle.
The transport quirk of the area: everything you need is 5–10 minutes away, but not on foot. The villas sit inland from the sea, so you ride to the beach, and to Boat Avenue, Porto de Phuket and the Villa Market and Lotus supermarkets too. Grab takes 20–30 minutes to get here. A scooter here isn’t an option, it’s the basic infrastructure of daily life.

Experience says yes. The villas of Cherng Talay sit inland from the sea: 5–10 minutes’ ride to the beach, the same to Boat Avenue and the supermarkets, and Grab takes 20–30 minutes to reach you. A scooter at 5,000–7,500 ฿ a month costs less than three taxi rides a day.
There’s a municipal car park by the main entrance (next to the football field) — bikes park for free. There are no sun loungers at Surin — bring a towel and come for sunset: it’s one of the best sunset beaches on the island.
