Phuket Areas Compared: Where to Stay and Rent a Scooter — Patong vs Bang Tao vs Kata vs Rawai
The short, honest answer from people who deliver scooters across the island every day: for the buzz — Patong, for quiet and villas — Bang Tao, for surf — Kata, for a long stay — Rawai. APARTEL has two offices — Patong and Bang Tao — bikes from 250 ฿/day, and free delivery along the west coast. And with a scooter, the choice of area stops being a life decision: any point on the island is within an hour. Here is the comparison, no gloss.
The areas side by side — table
| Area | Vibe | Who it suits | Scooter delivery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Patong | the centre of tourist life: Bangla Road, malls, night markets | first time in Phuket, nightlife, everything on foot | free, APARTEL office here |
| Bang Tao | 6 km of calm beach, villas, Laguna, Boat Avenue | families, couples, remote workers, long holidays | free, APARTEL office here |
| Kata | compact beach town, surf in low season, viewpoints nearby | surfers, younger crowd, active holidays | the south — by arrangement |
| Rawai | a fishing area rather than a resort: seafood markets, local cafes | long-stayers, living for months, authenticity | the south — by arrangement |
Patong — if you want everything buzzing
The island's most famous area: the beach, then a wall of hotels, restaurants and massage shops, and Bangla Road at night. The upside — everything is within walking distance and you never have to plan an evening. The downside — noise, crowds and higher prices than the neighbouring areas. A bike here is not for getting around Patong but for escaping it: 15 minutes and you are on quiet Kamala or Surin. The Patong–Kamala road goes over a hill — beautiful, but beginners should take it carefully, especially in the rain. Our Patong office hands out bikes on the spot — see the area page.
Bang Tao — if you want to breathe
Our second base and, honestly, our favourite area to live in: 6 kilometres of beach with room for everyone, the Laguna resort complex, villas, the Boat Avenue restaurants and zero nightlife noise. People come here with families and for months at a time. The roads are flat and calm — the best place on the island to sit on a scooter for the first time. Nearby are Surin and Layan, and to the north the wilder Nai Thon, Nai Yang and Mai Khao. Details on the Bang Tao page.
Kata — if you came for waves and viewpoints
A compact town in the southwest: a beach with a surfable wave in low season, surf schools and cafes with a younger crowd. Next door is Karon with its long beach, and the famous southern viewpoints are a short ride away. The minus — Kata is almost the whole island away from the airport, so transfers take longer. We deliver bikes here by arrangement; for the surrounding rides see the one-day scooter route.
Rawai — if you came to live, not to holiday
The south of the island where people live rather than holiday: fishing piers, a seafood market, cafes for locals and noticeably cheaper long-term housing than the beach areas. Rawai's own beaches are not great for swimming — but Nai Harn, one of the island's best, is 10 minutes away by bike. The classic long-stay setup: a place in Rawai plus a monthly bike from 3,400 ฿ — the maths is in the long-stay transport guide.
